In my series (known as Bill) centered around a group of gifted individuals, I needed to spend a little time on my protagonist: Elizabeth. Though I have to say, it was tough. I wanted to do this on my anti-hero as well as my heroine, but Elizabeth needed it more.

What’s their favorite book/movie/play/etc.?

She has a fondness for the cartoons of her childhood, specifically the 1953 cartoon version of Peter Pan. Elizabeth reads more than she partakes of other entertainment, owing to both an extraordinary number of books in her house and a profound deficit of time in her schedule for frivolous pursuits.

Is there anything they regret doing?

She has a few regrets: a teenage romance which ended badly, a few bumps along her road, and quarrels with friends. Above it all, she regrets a presumption she made about Godric at the beginning of their acquaintance; in fact, she is still dealing with the damage of this assumption in the present.

If they were sick or wounded, who would take care of them and how?

Her brother, Byron, would be by her side as often as business allowed, but Elizabeth was always good at looking after herself. Later on in the series, she is seriously wounded and receives aid from a most unexpected source.

Is there an object they can’t bear to part with and why?

Her mother’s necklace. She wears it every day; it keeps the memory of her parents close. It also contains one half of the Blackmore fragment, a shard of petrified wood plated in silver, which allows her to do remarkable things.

What are 5 ways to win their heart (or friendship)?

A person must be kind, show expertise at something, make literature references, be helpful, and show appreciation and/or acceptance of her quirks and abilities.

Describe a typical outfit for them from top to bottom.

Tidy hair, whenever possible, a plain sweater or knit top (varying from novelty t-shirts or a caramel peacoat, depending on the weather), dark jeans or slacks, and sensible shoes. She’s a girl who works, and she just doesn’t have time for footwear that makes her uncomfortable or clothes she can’t move in.

What’s their favorite type of weather?

Sunny afternoons where she can curl up with a book on the back patio, or clear evenings when she lights a fire in the charcoal pit and warms her bare feet while she watches the stars come out.

What’s the worst fight they’ve ever been in?

There was a kerfuffle in New Jersey a few years back. Someone died. The worst fight Elizabeth will ever face, however, is just around the corner.

What names or nicknames have they been called throughout their life?

Every. Single. Variant. Her name is Elizabeth Blackmore, and she’s gone by “E”, “L”, “Liz”, “Lizzy”, “El”, “Lisa”, “Blackie”, and “Colors”. A long story on the last one. Godric always calls her “Elizabeth”.

What makes their heart feel alive?

Helping others, soothing sadness, and feeding the weary souls of the world.
